Playlist: Songs for the Morning Debrief

Oftentimes, the best part of going out is coming back in, piecing together the full story of the night before. Sit on your kitchen counter, in your Twin XL beds, or a favorite brunch spot and get the details about last night. Here are some soothing and bright songs for the morning-after meetup with your friends.

There’s a routine to going out, and a particular soundtrack for each part. There’s the pregame: Drake and Metro Boomin. Next is the function itself: either a mellow collection of “underground” songs that acts as background noise to talk over, but more often, a variety of danceable songs.

The morning after is different — calmer and quieter, but not exactly somber or silent. It’s a little celebratory and a tiny bit humbling. Laundry goes in the wash, and then comes the debrief of all that happened the night before: Who did what with someone they shouldn’t have, who the roommates saw doing something embarrassing. It’s vulnerable and steady in a way the night before wasn’t, just as the beat rolls through Daniel Caesar’s “Japanese Denim.” Faye Webster’s trademark hints at romanticization, like in “Kingston,” and a few too many frank realizations, like the ones in Cassandra Jenkins’ “Michaelangelo.”

The windows are open (“Let the Sun In” by Wallows”) and your roommates can’t stop laughing. Relax, spill your guts, and debrief to this playlist of pleasant peace and happiness.
