Dear Gaga and Beyoncé, We Need a "Telephone" Sequel

It’s been eight years since the iconic “Telephone” music video came out, and our heads and hearts are still on the dancefloor. Hollywood, look no further: here’s a sequel we actually want to see happen.

No one can deny that the “Telephone” music video is iconic. It met every expectation one would have for a collaboration between the music industry’s most powerful women: Diet Coke cans used as hair curlers, telephones worn as hats, the murder of innocent bystanders, and the Pussy Wagon from “Kill Bill.” Typical, at least by Gaga’s standards.

But, the sheer oddity of the “Telephone” video is what makes it so perfect. A perfectly choreographed dance number with equally perfect costumes would be all too predictable, especially considering the climate of pop music in 2010. The “Thelma and Louise” recreation was more than Little Monsters and the Bey Hive alike could have ever asked for.

It’s time for Gaga and Bey to bless us with the sequel we were promised — and now is the perfect time in both of their careers to do so.

One cannot turn on their TV without hearing the name Lady Gaga. Whether receiving accolades for her performance as Ally Maine in “A Star is Born” or delighting thousands of adoring fans at her Las Vegas residency, “Enigma,” Gaga has cemented her place as pop music royalty.

Beyoncé, on the other hand, has retreated from the limelight, at least as a solo act. While she and husband Jay-Z released the bop-filled EVERYTHING IS LOVE last June, Beyoncé’s last huge moment as a solo act was her iconic headlining show at 2018’s Coachella. With the release of Disney’s “The Lion King” remake coming this summer, Beyoncé’s acting chops are poised to dominate pop culture discussion. Queen B should engage in at least one high-profile collaboration to remind us that her legacy extends far beyond the big screen.

And who better to collab with than Lady Gaga?

But, why a Telephone sequel in particular? Besides the fact that is has been eight whole years since the murderous duo blessed us with the most iconic music video of our generation, a “Telephone” sequel would be a breath of fresh air in comparison to the seemingly mundane music videos that have become the norm in the pop music scene lately.

Every proud Little Monster can remember anxiously awaiting the release of each Gaga music video, down to the very minute the music video was slated to be released. After each release, thousands of fans would debate what each costume change and scene in the music video symbolized. The “Telephone” music video, however, was no exception to this trend and it represented Gaga’s mastery of music video production at its peak.

With Gaga taking a more conventional approach in her music videos, as seen in the Joanne era, no pop artist has taken her place to provide us with the music video spectacles we deserve. There is no fanfare associated with most music video releases anymore, though Bey is a big exception to that rule: the visual album component of her 2016 album Lemonade garnered huge buzz when it originally premiered on HBO.

To put it simply, the girls just simply aren’t doing it like them anymore!

Besides, Gaga already revealed that she performed the “Telephone” sequel during her 2013 iTunes Festival set, so it’s not like a sequel hasn’t already crossed her mind. All that’s needed is for the duo to join forces again, complete with several custom designer outfits and a completely unexpected, almost nonsensical plotline.

Trade the big screen for the small screen ladies, and give us what we deserve!
