There are two types of people in the world: those who went through a horse girl phase and of course, scene kids. For those of you who practically lived in brightly colored skinny jeans and never left the house without your coontail hair extensions, take a trip down down memory lane and discover what your favorite bands have been up to since you left your scene days behind.
1. 3OH3!
Perhaps the most mainstream of bands in this list, the electronic music duo had a very busy 2018. To commemorate the 10 year anniversary of their first album WANT, which gave us classics such as “DONTTRUSTME” and “STARSTRUKK,” the duo went on a tour with Emo Nite and rapper lil aaron. Despite their recent live shows, the band’s last studio album, Night Sports was all the way back in 2016. 30H3!’s outrageous lyrical style that made them popular among the scene crowd was still evident in this release, with singles such as “My D---” and “BASMF” (Bada-- Stupid Motherf-----s).
2. All Time Low
Anyone who claims they never belted their pre-pubescent heart out to “Dear Maria, Count Me In” is lying. The Maryland band also had quite a busy 2018, releasing two singles “Birthday” and “Everything is Fine” as well as co-headlining the “Summer Ever After” tour with Dashboard Confessional. While the release of two new singles seemed to suggest an upcoming album to fans, All Time Low frontman Alex Gaskarth told Altpress that the band would be taking a break in 2019 before putting out another body of work.
3. Sleeping with Sirens
Before there was Shawn Mendes, there was Kellin Quinn. “If I’m James Dean, You’re Audrey Hepburn” had every scene kid feeling “smexi.” The band released their latest album, Gossip, in September of 2017 and followed it with the worldwide Up Close and Personal Gossip tour. In a recent interview with Alternative Press, Kellin Quinn told fans that the band’s next record would be “all about depression and anxiety,” something that he said “needs to be talked about.”
4. Hollywood Undead
Rap meets screamo meets scene with Hollywood Undead. The Los Angeles rap group, with their pseudonyms and face masks modeled after hockey goaltenders, was an instant hit with members of the scene subculture. The band’s latest album, V, was released in October of 2017 and the first album not to feature Matthew “Da Kurlzz” Busek after leaving the in early 2017. In early January 2019, the group posted two images on their Twitter account captioned “#HU6,” suggesting that a new album is just around the corner.
5. Asking Alexandria
Finishing off the list is the only non-American band: England’s Asking Alexandria. After releasing their album From Death to Destiny in 2013, lead vocalist Danny Worsnop left the band in 2015 to perform with new band We Are Harlot. There was a bit of drama surrounding Worsnop’s departure, for he and the other band members were not on good terms. Denis Stoff, of the Ukrainian metalcore band Make Me Famous, replaced Worsnop as Asking Alexandria’s lead vocalist shortly after his exit. In October of 2016, however, Worsnop returned to band and Stoff promptly left, with Worsnop claiming “[Stoff] was just keeping my seat warm.” Worsnop is still keeping his solo career alive with his country album, The Long Road Home, dropped in early 2017.
